Hi friends and family,
We have some exciting news to share with you! On Aug 1, 2016 we will be leaving our jobs and moving halfway around the world to Liberia for a year to serve as volunteers with an organization called AgriCorps.
AgriCorps is a PeaceCorps-type organization that takes American college graduates of agriculture and places them in developing countries to teach agricultural education in schools and local communities. As many of you know, Nathan and I are both passionate about agriculture, serving God, and serving others and we believe that “the place God calls you to be is the place where your deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet.” And so, for us at this stage of our life that means working abroad in a developing country and serving people through agriculture. Volunteering abroad in agricultural development is something that we have talked about, dreamed about, and prayed about as a couple for a long time so we can’t believe the time has finally come!
As AgriCorps members we will have many roles to fulfill within the community: 1) we will serve as high school ag teachers and FFA advisers, helping to work alongside Liberian science teachers and implementing new curriculum ideas and activities , 2)we will serve as Agriculture Extension Agents, working to provide resources, training, education to local farmers, and 3) we will be working as 4-H Extension Agents, helping to create clubs where youth can learn valuable life skills that will help them become leaders and innovators within their communities and 4) we will be training post-secondary school students in agricultural education and extension so that one day they can go back to their communities and teach these life skills and agricultural lessons. For so many throughout the world who are struggling to get by on subsistence farming, agriculture education can be the key in helping communities to break out of the poverty cycle and start on a new path. Whether that is by inspiring a youth to become an agricultural entrepreneur or leader, helping families to produce food more sustainably and efficiently, or by helping a community to reach for its full potential, agricultural education will always have a BIG impact.
We are reaching out to you in hopes that you might be interested in partnering with us. In order to participate in this program, together we need to raise $6,000 before July 1. This is a small amount compared to the $60,000 that AgriCorps has raised and contributed toward recruiting, training, and supporting a two volunteers abroad for a year. Your donation will go toward helping us directly to run programs within our community and every bit counts! For example, your $10 donation supports me as we teach one AgriSciene class, a $25 donation would help to support a local 4-H/FFA meeting, and a $100, $150, $200 donation would help to support a day-long or even weekend training for local farmers on sustainable agricultural practices. To give, please visit the “How Can You Help?” tab on our blog or mail a check which we will deposit for you into these fundraising accounts. Call us if you have any questions!
We hope that you will consider being a part of our support team through prayer, spreading the word, and/or through your finances. Either way, we hope that hope that you are able to enjoy this adventure alongside us by staying updated through this blog.
Thanks so much! Nathan & Anna
